“Alder Hey is a world renowned children’s hospital, based in John’s home town of Liverpool. When the hospital approached me to ask if I would support their wish to use one of John’s drawings for their new IMAGINE campaign I was only too delighted to help.
I don’t think many people know John’s artwork, but sketching was like his security blanket – when he wasn’t playing the guitar he was drawing. It seems to me entirely appropriate that one of the images he created out of love for our son Sean should be used to help the hospital to care for children worldwide.”

We have all been children, so we have a good idea of how a child might feel when they have to visit a hospital. Thankfully, through IMAGINE, we can all do something to help make it a less distressing and more comfortable experience, and ensure that Alder Hey’s pioneering work continues to make a difference to the lives of children in hospital.
The Hospital
Alder Hey Hospital
Alder Hey in Liverpool is the busiest children’s hospital in Europe. Since 1914 we have led the way in the care of sick children and we now treat more than 250,000 young patients every year. The hospital is the birthplace of modern paediatric anaesthesia; neonatal surgery and children’s cardiac surgery were pioneered in the 1940′s and 1950′s.
The hospital is one of the few with a University Institute of Child Health. There are 20 specialist services, which include bone marrow transplant, burns, cleft lip and palate, cancer, renal replacement and spinal injuries. The
supra-regional services include cardiology and craniofacial surgery.
